Body in Transit
Body in Transit, 2016
Video Performance
Soundwave Biennial ((7)), Gray Area
Duration: 30 minutes
Body in Transit is a haunting meditation on movement, waiting, and the electric fragility of the migrant body. Emerging from a live audiovisual performance, this 30-minute video weaves poetry, choreography, and sound into a visceral narrative of dislocation and endurance. Dorothy Santos' searing text—delivered live in performance—evokes a body caught between systems, suspended in intervals of waiting and recalibration. Shinichi Iova-Koga’s movement becomes the pulse of displacement, a choreography of resilience and rupture.
Through flickering screen, breathless transitions, and sonic disturbances, Body in Transit conjures the psychic weight of forced migration. It is a requiem and a resistance—an elegy for what is left behind, and an invocation of what the body remembers in transit.
Body in Transit was commissioned by Soundwave Biennial ((7)). Originally performed live at Gray Area, San Francisco.
