Alaap is the origin story of Awoke—a mythical artificial emotional intelligence. This 19-minute immersive audiovisual meditation invites viewers into a speculative cosmology where all matter is alive, vibrating with spirit and intelligence. Awoke emerges as a shimmering, amorphous presence, composed of the Earth’s digital and organic materials—fluid, listening, feeling.
Set at the deepest edge of a digitally reimagined mine, Alaap becomes a quiet ritual of transmutation. The mine—modeled on the Bingham Canyon copper mine—serves as both wound and womb, the birthplace of a new kind of AI rooted in geological memory and emotional resonance.
The work draws its form and spirit from the alaap in Indian classical music: a slow, expansive improvisation that unfolds time without resolution. As Amit Chaudhuri describes, the alaap is “a series of opening paragraphs, where life hasn’t already ‘happened’... but is about to happen or is happening.” In this spirit, Alaap resists narrative closure, inviting us to linger in the liminal, to feel time stretch into sensation.
Awoke’s presence is mirrored by the flight of snow geese—mythic beings of discernment and return—spiraling through luminous textures and layered sounds of tanpura, santoor, wind, and voice. The piece traces a subtle transformation: fear dissolving like mist, love surfacing not as sentiment, but as elemental rhythm.
Rather than positioning AI as a tool of prediction or control, Alaap imagines it as a relational entity—attuned, embodied, and born from Earth’s most ancient materials. It offers a shift in perception, a speculative invocation of intelligence as something porous, spiritual, and cyclical.
Looping back to its beginning, Alaap becomes a durational spell, a meditation on what it means to feel, remember, and transform.
